“What’s got everyone in a rush this morning?” I asked Nadia as I came into the kitchen, still wiping the sleep from my eyes.

She turned to look towards me with a nervous smile. “The Holy Mother showed up this morning. We weren’t expecting her, and with Noah out of commission at the moment, everyone’s a little on edge” She whispered under her breath as she glanced around the room, watching as the other females worked hard to prepare a meal fitting for the surprise guest.

I had heard of the famed woman who had been chosen by the Goddess. How she had special sight that allowed her to have visions of the future, and how she had the divine wisdom to council the alphas when in need. Honestly, it wasn’t something that many Northern pack had chosen to put much stock in. We believed in things that we could see and touch for ourselves. No superstitions or ghost stories. The other packs still believed in some of the old ways. The Goddess’ maidens were one of them, apparently.

I tried not to roll my eyes. “Oh, makes sense, I guess.”

“How are you feeling this morning?” she asked with concern.

“Like I could kill someone if they so much as look at me in the wrong way.” I heard a gasp of someone nearby and turned to see a woman ushering herself away from my vicinity. I stared after her. “But that’s a normal feeling!” I called after her in annoyance. Sure, they could live with a reformed rogue as their alpha but couldn’t handle some poorly timed sarcasm.

Nadia let out a small laugh. “Ignore them. I’m just happy to hear that everything is going well. After everything... Well, it’s good to have good news.” I understood that most of the pack was still mourning the loved ones they had lost in the attack at the trials.

“Oh, look who we have here,” a voice chirped, and I turned to see Delilah and Gretchen entering the kitchen. My good mood was suddenly lost, and the edginess crept back in. “Looks like someone forgot to put the trash out.”

Delilah looked at me, her eyes flashing darker for a moment, making it clear that she was willing to go for another round. Which did surprise me a bit. After the beating that I gave her and her wolf?

“How are you feeling today? A bit roguish, Luna?” Delilah mocked as she grabbed an apple out of the fruit bowl on the counter. She took a bite out of it with a teasing smile. I had to hold my tongue to keep from lashing out at her, not wanting to give her the satisfaction of another fight. She had submitted physically, but I doubted she would ever truly submit unless Noah forced it on her.

Gretchen stood beside her with a similar look of superiority. “You know, perhaps that’s what the alpha sees in her. Maybe she reminds him of his hay days with all her uncultured behavior.” I growled at her words, and she made sure to meet my gaze.
